Spotlighting SVHS Staff

Through the years, Scotts Valley High School has been served by dedicated staff members who have worked very hard to educate and support students, their families and the community. Staff members include those working in administration, athletics, the classroom, the college & career center, counseling, facilities, food service, health/wellness, the library, the office and safety/security. Today there are 38 staff members at SVHS.

Two staff members at SVHS have been there from the beginning: Perry Contridas who currently serves as the Night Custodian and Louie Walters who serves as Athletic Director.  We also have a number of long-serving staff members at SVHS.

And one of those long-serving staff members is Kelly Cox who currently oversees attendance at SVHS. She is revered by students, families and the SVHS team for her effectiveness, kindness and student-centered approach. Here is Kelly in her own words about her experience at SVHS.

Why did you choose to work at SVHS?

I have worked at all the district school sites and I was an aide in special ed at Vine Hill at the time of the job posting for SVHS. I was looking to work full time, but the special ed department did not have full time opportunities. I was actually terrified to go to the high school. I didn't even apply until the last day! As it turns out, it was the best thing I have ever done!  :)

When did you start and what was your first role?

I started in 2005 and I was the front office clerk. It was the first time they had anyone in that position, so I kind of got to do lots of support jobs, which was fun.

Why have you chosen to stay at SVHS?

I have fallen in love with the students and staff at the High School.

I really enjoy all the student interaction and being able to help students in any way I can.

The staff here is so supportive and feels like a second family. There is much respect and love here!

What do you enjoy the most about working at SVHS?

I love working with the kids. They make my day, every day.

I am so blessed to be here for them and love the time I can be there, be it just attendance matters, helping with health services, answering questions or just to listen.

What is the biggest change you've seen at SVHS over the years?

There have been many changes over the years. One that stands out is that there is more attention and action in regards to mental health since we have returned to school from Covid.

The students also show a broader understanding and acceptance for all students and their circumstances. Much more inclusivity over all.
